EBU drives and harmonizes Hybrid Broadcast Broadband systems
02 September 2009

EBU TECHNICAL welcomes the recent announcement about the HbbTV specification for hybrid broadcast broadband television, which will be submitted to the ETSI JTC Broadcast for standardization. EBU TECHNICAL and the EBU Technical Committee have been a focal point for commenting and facilitating interactions on the HbbTV specification in its development.

EBU Group D/WMT

Much of the work in the EBU has been done via its Project D/WMT, which is managed by EBU TECHNICAL and led by the RAI. The Project Group brings together experts from Member organisations, and has been the means for EBU Member, including the RAI, RTVE, and BBC, to contribute and comment on the development of the HbbTV specification.

Improve interoperability

Lieven Vermaele, Director EBU TECHNICAL, stated "HBB was on our agenda of the Technical Committee for more than one year. We are very happy that in such a short time frame a first open specification has been published. We are very pleased with the important involvement of EBU TECHNICAL and our Project Group in this process. All members of EBU have been able to give their comments. Our target now is to promote interoperability between the different industry initiatives in this domain, with a view to ensuring maximum commonality between systems deployed by its Members and by the industry in general."

Live HbbTV demo at IBC

An unique opportunity will available at IBC where live HbbTV will be demonstrated on the EBU TECHNICAL booth at IBC (10.D21). HbbTV, and other compatible systems, promise to bring the prospect of open standards to the strategically important area of HBB services and devices.
