This group is tasked to assess automated upmix and downmix systems in light of the user requirement that after this processing is applied the audio should be fit for purpose and more, should be re-convertible again to its original state with no audible deterioration. A quality stereo recording upmixed to 5.1 for inclusion in HDTV programme should be indestinguishable from segments originated in 5.1.

Scope
To conduct studies into systems that convert mono to stereo (two channel) and stereo audio into surround sound (5 channels) (up-mixing) and vice-versa (down-mixing). Compatibility with existing down-mix techniques, as found in domestic receivers, is a significant consideration.
