Digital Radio in Europe
The term "Digital radio" can lead to confusion as many different digital systems can be used for radio. However, in Europe, it generally refers to the terrestrial digital systems specifically designed for radio delivery, which are standardised (ETSI) and compatible with European broadcast spectrum plans.

Aspects to consider for digital radio

- Cost efficiency of the network, availability of spectrum.

- Free to air delivery, possiblity for compact and cheap receivers , mobile/portable reception, simplicity of use.

- Multimedia capabilities, including pictures, enhanced text services, rich media, electronic programme guides, etc.

- Traffic and travel information ( TPEG )

Apart from technical aspects, the success of digital radio strongly depends on the added value of digital compared to analogue AM/FM offerings. It is crucial that attractive content be available exclusively on the digital platforms.

European platforms

In Europe two main families of digital system can be identified as primary broadcast distribution platforms for radio:

   1. The DAB family of systems
DAB, DAB+ and T-DMB for VHF Band III

   2. The DRM family of systems
DRM in the "AM" bands, DRM+ for the FM band (and possibly in Band I).

Beside these, there are other digital systems not specifically designed for radio that can be used to transport audio. They may become secondary delivery platforms as part of a global offer (e.g. a TV satellite multiplex), or they may be provided to attract listeners to new platforms.  Internet Radio is also to be considered as part of a hybrid broadcast/broadband approach.

The EBU's focus

EBU TECHNICAL is currently focussing on DAB/DAB+/T-DMB and DRM/DRM+, but also follows activities related to Internet radio. The EBU contributes to the development, promotion and harmonization of Digital Radio. EBU TECHNICAL is active member of the WorldDMB Forum , the DRM consortium , RadioDNS and  IMDA . EBU TECHNICAL also works closely with the EBU Radio Department , which studies content for the new platforms and promotes them to broadcasters.
